Inside The Ring: Part 1When it comes to dog shows, word "handler" is the person actually in the ring with the dog. A "professional" handler would be a handler that shows dogs as his profession and he gets paid for being in the ring with the dog. You who are not familiar with the word may misinterpret some of these statements. When we say, "watch the good handlers," we do not necessarily mean the professional handlers. There are good handlers who are strictly amateurs. Along with the two main mistakes a novice exhibitor makes, that of holding the show lead in two hands instead of one, and of taking tiny, little mincing steps when gaiting his dog, there are many small things, not exactly mistakes, which should be pointed out to him in order to improve his handling. These are not in any particular order of importance, for when it comes right down to fine points, they are all important.

A Crate And A Bed For Your New Puppy Your puppy needs a crate. It is his private, personal, snug den where he can sleep, chew a toy and watch the world around him, completely undisturbed. Crates come in two styles: closed (fiberglass) or open (wire). The closed crate is draft-proof, but some puppies as well as their owners want to be able to see more. The open variety offers this visibility, but most dogs like the crate covered, especially while they are sleeping. Basic Equipment For Your Puppy You do not have to spend a fortune on equipment for your new puppy, though it is a good idea to have a number of essential items on hand before you bring your puppy home. These include food and water bowls, collar and leash, grooming tools, shipping crate or metal cage, deodorizer/cleaner, and toys. Do not wait until you already have the puppy to do this, since you will be using them right from the start. Try a pet-supply store or mail-order catalogue, as opposed to a department or hardware store because the products are usually sturdier and of better quality. Choosing Dog Training Methods Before choosing a particular training method, carefully examine the technique to ensure that it will communicate proper associations. Certain methods may not communicate what you intend. A dog-aggressive Akita was enrolled in a training program that his owner thought was reputable. The trainer convinced the owner that the only way to break the Akita of aggression toward other dogs was to let a more dominant dog put him in his place. The trainer's dog displayed dominance toward other dogs, so she placed him in a room with the Akita and left the two dogs to work things out. When the trainer heard a window crashing, she opened the door to find that her dog was injured, and the Akita had been richly rewarded for his aggressive behavior with a nice victory under his collar. Dealing With Dogs That Hate Either Men or Women Hating men or women is the most peculiar form of instability in dogs. They seem to be sweet and happy with one sex and nervous or vicious with the other. What form of neurosis causes this we don't know. What can an owner do to make a dog with this nature livable? Dog's First Aid Kit For Traveling Although you cannot prevent emergencies from happening, you can prepare for them by having the necessary supplies readily available when you need them. When traveling with your dog, you should carry a first aid kit that is specifically designed for your dog. The kit should include the following 14 items in addition to your cell phone: |
