How to Stop Your Dog from Jumping

Dogs do have the habit to jump all over the family members when they feel like and they manifest the same whenever guests enter your house, not to mention they are tempted to jump over the furniture in the house as well. Understanding correctly why your puppy or your dog jumps all over the place will allow you take the measures into stopping him from doing so in the future.

First of all, the reason why dogs do this is because they seek attention or they want something from you (either to get a treat or to go out). Some other occasions will determine your dog to jump all over because he will try to prove the supremacy in the pack of which the dog is a member. In case the jumping happens and you respond, it means that the dog pet has reached his purpose.

If your dog shows traits of behavior related to lack of socialization not understanding that you are the leader of the pack in the house, then you shouldn’t give course to his jumping. Once you do not respond in the way you are expected to, your dog will have to understand that you are in control of the pack and not him. This will make him stop from jumping.
If the jumping occurs simply for begging attention, then follow the three steps from below and have this jumping stopped with a consistency in your actions:

  • When getting ready to jump in the park while walking try to direct his attention to another area of interest, such as it would be with fetching the ball. In this way the dog will connect the notion of playing with your arrival.
  • Teach your dog to obey the command of sitting. When you notice that your dog is about to jump, command him to sit and once he has done that give him a treat. He will learn in this way that instead of jumping and not getting anything, he would rather sit and get a treat with this gesture.
  • Teach your dog to cool down when he begins jumping by saying in a firm tone a clear “NO”. This thing must be repeated every time he starts jumping and meanwhile do not laugh or have a playful attitude, bur rather be firm until he obeys.

It is very important to use the same words and the same technique with perseverance and consistency, the same as it is done with the dog training. Make sure that you preserve a calm attitude and not a single muscle should move on your face when commanding.

If these methods do not work the way you expect or you find them too severe for your way of being with your dog, then ask for the help of a professional. They will know how to work with these dog issues handling the situation in a positive manner.
